3 Tips on Keeping Squirrels Out of the Attic

They may look small and fat, but they move like ninjas with claws. If you're not careful, your property may fall prey to a squeak attack.

Squirrels can be incredibly stealthy. No matter how cute they may seem from a distance, trust us when we say that they do not make good tenants. Especially since their long-term plan may be to use your attic as a birthing suite—and then a nursery.

If you already have squirrels in your attic, don't worry. 911 Wildlife has performed many a squirrel removal in Houston, DFW and surrounding areas. Our methods of humane wildlife removal through eviction and exclusion are geared toward ensuring that your home and the squirrels are safe, and we have a ten-year guarantee.

However, if you're currently living in a house free of rodents, keep it that way.

Here's the best way to prevent a bushy-tailed invasion.

Seal off the Entry Points

Squirrels won't march through your front door. Their acrobatic antics will allow them to access the highest points. They will most likely find the tiniest gap in your roofing or even the vents. Once they're in, they might not be able to leave. That is, if they even want to.

Give your property a quick inspection and block any holes you might see, no matter how small.

Do Not Hang Bird Feeders on Or Near Your Home

This is not to say that you shouldn't hang bird feeders, opt to hang them in trees a safe distance from your walls. Otherwise, squirrels and other pests will see them as an invitation to approach the house, and once they're there, their curious nature will prompt them to explore.

Also, their social anxiety is a part of their nature. Once they're in, they might be hard to find.

Scent Your Attic

Squirrels hate strong smells. They avoid places that smell like skunks, cider vinegar, or ammonia. However, odds are that you do too.

Fortunately, they also dislike the smell of pepper (as do raccoons). If none of these work, you could choose a smell that you find favorable so long as it's strong. Consider splashing some cinnamon essential oil around your attic. You can also leave out mothballs or hang dry coffee grounds in sachets.

Worst case scenario, if you do find yourself playing landlord to a squirrel family, try to think of it as a good omen but don't let them stay. Resident squirrels will lead to property damage and an unpleasant living situation for your actual family members.

Keep in mind that baby squirrels are completely dependent on their mothers, so always opt for the humane approach. 911 Wildlife has decades of experience with all kinds of animals.
